A trip to the caverns at Ledgeview Nature Center.
For some, there is sadness. The wanton destruction and needless loss of life is saddening, and this feeling is okay. For some, it brings hope. The hope that only comes from witnessing people come together, collectively under one banner, one cause. To do good. To help. And that puts faith back into humanity.
My problem is that for some, it is fuel. Fuel for the fires of anger. That anger inside, at an individual, a group, a group of individuals.
Let us not forget what this brought that continues to this day. I have seen the names of people that I once knew on the list of dead from the unneccessary wars that came out of this event.
Because of this event, we are there still, twelve long years later. It feels like we forgot about them, these people who woke up this very morning in a hostile environment, with no good reason for being where they are, dealing with the very real possibility of not living through the day. Or possibly worse, living with the real mental trauma that we have seen in so many veterans who have found their way home. And they are there because of this event that we have memorialized.
I think we collectively know that letting go is such an important part of healing. And yet collectively we don’t do that. We carry this on and on, this burden.
I wish we wouldn’t.
This does not feel like the burden of love.
There be dragons here!
Sometimes I am having too much fun and I shouldn’t call it a job. The Bay Beach Park crew installed the dragon heads and tested the ride (see awkward video here). The Sea Dragon is the latest installment of Bay Beach Amusement Park and is located right in front of Elvis’ favorite ride, the Zippin Pippin.
The Green Bay Tall Ships Festival was this past weekend and better weather couldn’t have been asked for. This three-day maritime festival features ship tours and day-sail excursions on nine tall ships.
What are Tall Ships? A tall ship is a large traditionally rigged sailing vessel. Popular modern tall ship rigs include topsail schooners, brigantines, brigs, and barques. Traditional rigging may include square rigs and gaff rigs, with separate topmasts and topsails.
If you follow the news closely, it’s easy to overlook the positive things a community does.
Today children were given a chance to learn about bike safety and get free bike helmets at Packers Training Camp. The first 500 children at the rodeo received a free bike helmet. Kids who already had helmets were able to get them properly fitted. They also got the chance to ride through a bike safety course. This is the second year I have attended this event.
Last night was the 3rd annual Hunka Hunka Burning Lights event at the Zippin Pippin roller coaster. August 8th marks the anniversary of Elvis’ last ride on the Zippin Pippin (located in Memphis at the time) and the only day of the year that the coaster can be ridden after dark. Elvis’ 8/8/77 last ride occurred just eight days before his death. As the story goes, Elvis rented the entire Libertyland Park in Memphis and rode the roller coaster for hours straight throughout the night. He lost a belt buckle that night that was returned the next day.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
