Thanks to a partnership between the Library of Virginia, Virginia State Parks and the Science Museum of Virginia, you can check out a nature backpack from many libraries throughout Virginia. My aspiring young scientists wanted to check one out to take on our regular adventures, and I’m glad we did.
The pack itself is pretty lightweight and just the right size for a young field scientist. Some of they key items the pack contains include; a FREE pass to any Virginia State Park, a portable specimen (bug) containment unit, a x2 and x10 magnifying glass, a multi-purpose net, and a handful of field guides. The pack also contains some instructions and ideas about how to use the pack. We decided to get right to it and head to nearby Powhatan State Park.
Through the use of the field guides and equipment, we found, captured, cataloged, and returned to nature many field specimens as we spent time enjoying the great outdoors and the beautiful state park space!
See if your library has one to check out, for science!
